We hear this question alot…does my insurance cover the cost of breast pumps? Debbie Dvorachek (LPN,WCC), a business development associate with the Agnesian Health Shoppe, explains the answer to this question.
Prior to healthcare reform, the majority of breast pumps and supplies for nursing mothers was an expense that a consumer had to pay for on their own. Today, with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) being signed into law, one of the most valuable aspects of this law is it requires health plans to cover breastfeeding pumps and supplies without co-payments. Many private health insurance carriers or commercial insurers began implementing this coverage on or after August 1, 2012.
Even though the ACA has expanded the benefits for breastfeeding pumps and supplies, the Agnesian Health Shoppe is finding insurance companies coverage varries. The Agnesian Health Shoppe, located at 327 Winnebago Drive in Fond du Lac (telephone 800-732-1313), can call your insurance to verify your insurance coverage on breastfeeding pumps and supplies. We are finding that many insurance companies will cover 100 percent of the cost for the breastfeeding pump and supplies, while other insurance companies may apply the purchase of the pump and supplies towards your deductible. Yet, some other insurance companies may not pay for the supplies.
