Advanced Treatment of Prostate Cancer with Radiation Therapy

Cancer Care Robotic Table There are many different options for treating prostate cancer.  Treatment options are based on several factors including stage, grade and Gleason score.  It is often helpful to get a second opinion when determining which treatment is right for you.  Most curative prostate cancers are treated by Urologists and Radiation Oncologists.

One advanced treatment option for prostate cancer is a form of radiation therapy called Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT).  The VMAT treatments deliver high doses of radiation to kill the cancer but also limit the amount of radiation to normal healthy cells nearby.  VMAT treatments are delivered in a short amount of time with no discomfort to the patient during treatment.  According to Dr. Michael Vander Kooy Radiation Oncologist at the Agnesian Cancer Center, “We can deliver VMAT treatments with precise accurate patient alignment using our robotic couch for patient positioning.  This is important because the precise individualized alignment with the robotic table allows us to safely and accurately deliver high doses of radiation to the prostate.”  The Agnesian Cancer Center was the first cancer center in the world to install and clinically use the Civco Protura Robotic table.  The highly specialized robotic table can also be used for many other treatment areas.

According to Dr. Vander Kooy, “When my patients receive VMAT radiation treatments; each treatment takes only a few minutes to deliver.  The vast majority of  men maintain their daily lifestyle with minimal changes and very few side effects thanks to our VMAT treatment and robotic table.”
